Jade & Hardstone

Nephrite, russet jade, and natural hardstone — slowly carved by a single artisan over weeks or months. Read for the lines first, the colour second; both reward patience.

Russet Jade 'Mythical Bird' Sculpture

Carved from a single boulder of nephrite — the russet skin retained on the head and tail to suggest plumage, while the body has been worked back to the cool, clear stone beneath. A small, deliberate piece intended for the desk or a single shelf.

On Carving

A practice measured in months, not days.

Reading the stone

Each boulder is studied for weeks before the first cut — the artisan plans the form around the natural skin, fissures, and colour pockets unique to the piece.

Carving by hand

Bow-driven and powered tools alike, but every contour is finished by hand. A single sculpture often passes through the same artisan's hands for two to four months.

Russet skin

The warm, oxidised outer layer is left in place wherever it suggests an animal, leaf, or cloud — a quiet conversation between the carver and what the stone already wanted to be.
