Care & cleaning
Made to be lived with.
Porcelain. Dust with a soft, dry brush. For more thorough cleaning, hand-wash in lukewarm water with a small amount of mild soap. Avoid dishwashers, abrasive cloths, and sudden temperature changes — gilt and over-glaze enamels can lift over time if heated.
Jade & hardstone. Wipe with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid contact with detergents, perfumes, and prolonged sun. Worn jade is happiest with skin contact — its colour deepens slightly over months and years.
Yixing teapots. Never use soap. Rinse with hot water only, ideally the same tea you brew. Allow to air-dry with the lid off. Dedicate each pot to one type of tea — the unglazed clay holds the flavour.
Lacquer. Wipe with a barely-damp cloth, then immediately dry. Keep out of direct sunlight and away from radiators. Lacquer prefers stable humidity.
Embroidered silk. Spot-clean only, with a soft cloth and cool water. For framed panels, dust the glass — never the silk. Avoid hanging in direct sun, which fades silk dyes.
Frequently asked
FAQ.
Are these antiques?
No. Almost everything in the gallery is contemporary — made by working artisans, often in 2024 or 2025, in the techniques of the imperial kilns. Where a piece is older or attributed, we will say so explicitly on the listing.
Can I see a piece before buying?
Yes — by appointment in our New York studio, or by video call if you're abroad. We can also send extra photos and dimensions on request.
Do you accept commissions?
For some artisans, yes. Custom orders typically take 6–12 weeks and require a 50% deposit. Write to us with what you have in mind — we'll tell you whether it's possible.
Do you offer trade pricing?
Yes. We work with a small number of interior designers and architects through our trade program — write to trade@inkandsilk.gallery for the details.
Do you ship internationally?
Worldwide, fully insured. Duties and import taxes outside the US are the buyer's responsibility — we'll help you estimate them before you commit.
What if my piece arrives broken?
Send us photos within 48 hours. We arrange replacement or refund immediately, and handle the insurance claim with the carrier ourselves — you're not in the middle of it.
